Project ThemeResearch on Non-Ableist Approaches to Technology
Accessibility and ableism are two sides of the same coin. In some cases, they can risk assimilating minorities into a society designed for the non-disabled, ultimately reinforcing dominant values. Technology, in many ways, has accelerated this tendency.
This research focuses on the relationship between technology and ableism, examining activist movements and social implementations led by marginalized communities that have been historically excluded from non-disabled, capitalist-centered values.
Profile
With the theme “Disability as a perspective for reinterpreting the world,” Miyuki Tanaka organizes projects that transcend categories, rethinking, with viewers, the ways we perceive and engage with expression. She was a visiting researcher at the Center for Disability Studies at New York University in 2022.
Her works include Rules? (21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, 2021) and Creating with sound. Playing with sound. A game center that inspires imagination and creativity “Audio Game Center + CCBT” (Civic Creative Base Tokyo, 2024). Her publications include Who Is Accessibility For? (Little More) and Rule? Book: Design for Creative Living (co-authored, Film Art).
