Project ThemeResearch Toward the Observation, Analysis, and Artistic Translation of Microplastics in the Hudson River and New York Bay Area
Microplastics are part of serious environmental pollution, yet they also represent plastic products that once sustained our everyday life, now detached from human utility and desire. Focusing on the Hudson River and New York Bay area, this project explores—through dialogues at research institutions, laboratories, and art spaces—how these tiny, easily overlooked fragments are observed, analyzed, articulated, and translated into artworks. By engaging with researchers, curators, and artists, the project aims to build a foundation for an interdisciplinary practice spanning photography, sculpture, and research.
Profile
Tsuyoshi Anzai is a Japanese artist who explores the relationship between humans and plastic through simply structured machines made from improvised combinations of everyday objects and motors. In recent years, his practice has focused on microplastics, developing research projects and sculptural works. His major solo exhibitions include “Aperto 12: Tsuyoshi Anzai, ‘Poly-’” (2020, 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, Ishikawa) and “Grounded” (2021, Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Germany).
